NAGA Dreadball League Round 1 - the opening round.

Monday saw the opening round of my first Dreadball league.

It's an open league so anyone can join anytime and we are still taking on players. (For those in the Nuneaton area, check us out, "NAGA Nuneaton Alternative Gamers Association" on FB)

I've written up the first game as a bit of a story. At the moment the teams are unknown entities only being successful at low level leagues. They are entering an audition for the big leagues, where millions of teams are being whittled down in mass games of Dreadball Ultimate. These games are not the huge events that Dreadball fans will be familiar with from holovision, they are worn down and only attended by the bored locals or possibly a few die hard fans who have travelled far to see their friends play.

Over to the commentator:
Welcome to Game 1033/888054 in the NAGA Dreadball League quickfire try-outs, we appreciate you joining us on this cold dark evening, the weather is bad it’s a horrible day for the 4,000 fans in the stands taking cover in balconies 1 and 3, but they are truly dedicated fans indeed.
The Refbot for this match is a Mk 4 Clevertron, ID: 38555**209 so only in its 209th recall it should provide us a pretty reliable game. We've been asked to call her "Sally 209"
These four teams have made names for themselves on their home planets but we at the NAGA league refuse to recognise them until they have proved themselves on the field, or have been shamed in the name of sport!
It’s only a 4 team game tonight as the other two teams were onboard the ill-fated Coruscean transport which met its end earlier tonight.
In the yellow corner, a female team from the corporation on Scion MCM.
In the purple corner, a Forgefather team from the mines of Beta 9V.
In the red corner, a Veer-Myn team from Loral IV.
And in the green corner a male corporation team from Dath.
The teams are taking to the field, it’s looking like they are ready to go.
“Sally209” is raising her hand, AND THE FIRST BALL IS LAUNCHED!
Round 1
The male Corp team is sprinting ahead, there’s some muscling happening between the Veer-Myn and the male Corp in their back rows.
AND THE SECOND BALL IS LAUNCHED! It’s been snapped up by male Corp Striker number 6, who is making strides back up towards his own zones.
What's this? A Forgefather Guard, Number 3 is charging headlong at one of the girls’ Jacks, and oh my I think he’s taken her out badly, yes she’s flown across the pitch like a ragdoll. Guard number 3 is rubbing his neck but he looks unhurt. The Female Corp Jack is looking rather lifeless and OH LOOK ITS THE MALE CORP STRIKER NUMBER 6 HEADING FOR THE VEER-MYN HOME ZONE, he lines up, shoots and SCOOOORES!! 2 points to the male corps there.
Round 2 – Current Scores: Female Corp:0 / Forgefather:0 / Veer-Myn:0 / Male Corp:2
The female corp Guard is getting slightly more boisterous, possibly angered by her teammate’s demise, there’s a fair amount of rough and tumble over in their zone, OH AND THE VEER-MYN STRIKER HAS SNATCHED THE BALL AWAY AND IS TEARING ACROSS THE PITCH TOWARDS THE FORGEFATHERS’ HOME ZONE, he passes, it’s good, AND SCORES!!!!!! 2 points to the Veer-Myn to bring them up in joint 1st with the male Corps.
Forgefather Guard 1 has mumbled something off-coloured regarding the dead female Corp player, unfortunately the big cam was right on his face at the time, the crowd are not happy! He’s being pelted with debris, a Millidog straight to the face! Great shot by that unruly mob on the sidelines, OH!! He’s been taken out by male Corps Guard 2, the crowd is ecstatic!! Male Corp Jack 4 is really lapping this up, he’s waving to the crowd as he makes his way around the side of the pitch!
Round 3 – Current Scores: Female Corp:0 / Forgefather:0 / Veer-Myn:2 / Male Corp:2
Seemingly emboldened by the crowd support female Corp Striker 3 has battled her way through the male Corp defense, past the Veer-Myn Guards and SCOOOOORES!! 1 Point there in the male Corp / Veer-Myn Shared Zone, deducting a point from both of those teams! That’s an equalizer right there, It seems like the Forgefathers have taken this distraction as an opportunity to get the second ball up the field and its Striker 7, he shoots! SCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORES!! IN THE SAME ZONE NO DOUBT!! The Veer-Myn and male Corp need to bolster their defense, that’s all of their points gone!
Round 4 – Current Scores: Female Corp:1 / Forgefather:1 / Veer-Myn:0 / Male Corp:0
The Veer-Myn Defence are nodding to each other knowingly, I think they all know they need to take this fight out into the opposing arm, the Veer-Myn Strikers have bolted out of their zone after the ball, but what’s this? The male Corp Strikers have run back into their arm of the pitch, theyr’e heading for the Veer-Myn Home Zone!! He shoots! SCORES!! The Veer-Myn team are shaking their heads in disbelief! They cannot believe it!
They should probably keep their eyes on the game though as there’s a male Corp Jack running around their back lines with the other ball WOAH! The ball has SHATTERED?!! I think it must have been an old ball, that is very unfortunate. The game must go on however, another has been fired back into the pitch while the male Corp team are left scratching their heads.
Round 5 – Current Scores: Female Corp:1 / Forgefather:1 / Veer-Myn:0 / Male Corp:2
It’s getting late in the game now, the Veer-Myn really need to pull this out the bag to compete in this game, they really are pushing forwards now, they’re all over the Forgefather/female Corp zones like a plague. The ball is flying all over the place, OH! There’s been an incident out in the Forgefather zone, a Veer-Myn Striker has been wiped off the pitch, his tail is still twitching though. The team are unphased, the ball heads towards the female Corps Home Zone, its in!! SCORE! 2 points to the Veer-Myn, the female Corps reduced to 0, they are not happy!
Round 6 – Current Scores: Female Corp:0 / Forgefather:1 / Veer-Myn:2 / Male Corp:2
I think the players are getting tired out there, the girls look like they are all out of puff, the Veer-Myn are spread all over the place, the Forgefathers are bunched up in a defensive wall. Only the male Corp team seem to be active, they’re going in for the final Strike, the Veer-Myn can’t stop them, and its IN, SCOOOOOOREEEE! That’s the game over right there! Another 2 points for the male Corps, 1 point stolen from under the Veer-Myns’ noses.
The klaxon sounds signaling game end, now that was an unexpectedly eventful game for such a low league try-out. I look forward to seeing these teams take to the field again.
Final Scores: Female Corp:0 / Forgefather:1 / Veer-Myn:1 / Male Corp:4
That leaves the league points standing at:
Male Corporation:.......... 3
Veer-Myn:………………..1
Forgefather:…………......1
Female Corporation:........0

Over to the player interviews:
Striker 6 (Male Corporation): “I think we just proved that skill and a bit of luck win over brutality”
Unknown Striker (Veer-Myn): “Rat King will be displeased”
Guard 1 (Forgefather): “Ironically we made more money at this game from the crowd throwing their food at me”
Guard 3 (Forgefather):"haha, I think I've slipped a disk or something, my shoulders are numb, I can't feel a thing anymore"
Coach (Female Corporation): “I’m afraid we are announcing our retirement from the league due to the fatality. The ‘Lady Killers’ have been a great team but out star player was literally crushed by our defeat.”

I'll make sure I get photos next time.

Last night saw the opening round of the NAGA 40k (6th edition) competition, I've taken nids (as I haven't got the new IG/AM book yet, I'm waiting until I can dedicate hobby time to the guard army before I worry about it.
My first round was against Dave with Noise marine Chaos. I won't go into details until the end of the competition but I managed to pull a win somehow

Here's a little picture to get you started... The Hive Tyrant is challenged by Lucius...

Catch you all soon.(btw I'm having disqus issues posting comments to other blogs but I can assure you I regularly check in to see what's happening in the local blogosphere.)

Cheers!

The Lucky 88th History

The Lucky 88th

The Royal planet of Borlina is just off the Cadian gate, once a thriving hive planet with a high percentage of royal and rich descendants from Terra itself. Now a diseased, war torn hell hole, home to a twisted secret the Inquisition would rather not recount.

The Curse of Borlina

During a Chaos incursion (Blood & Bile of the Rich Invasion 960.M41) Inquisitor Payne ordered the Orbital Bombardment of the entire planet, choosing Viral Bombing as the means of execution of the foul beasts and corrupted Governors.
Unfortunately the Borlina PDFs were also sentenced to death, whilst deeply in conflict with the Chaos forces.
Under pressure from Inquisitor Rayvenn (of the Black Storm), Inquisitor Payne mercifully ordered areas with high concentrations of loyal forces to be bombed with a weaker strain of the virus. Whilst the planet was bombed with Virus 1, a highly corrosive airborne agent which subsides after 1 day. Virus 13 (a Plague like virus with no corrosive element) was deemed legal for use over loyalist troops, who were forewarned, advised to find cover and don gas equipment. Low on supplies, deep in conflict and without gas equipment the lucky 88th miraculously fought off Virus 13 as if it was a bad case of flu.

Affirmation

A nearby Commissariat fleet jumped at the opportunity to put together their own personal force and made planet fall to gather together the pockets of loyal troops into a fighting regiment. This proved quite difficult, requiring the aid of the nearby Space Marine chapters (“Dragon Marines” and “Black Storm”) to seek out loyal forces.

The largest surviving regiment had barricaded themselves in the Master Palace, which impressed the commissariat no end, for it was a disease ridden nightmare, the very palace itself was a Nurgle infested monstrocity.
Having already adopted the name “Lucky 88th” due to the large amount of survivors from the 88th regiment the troops added a Lucky Ace symbol to their armour and vehicles, much to the annoyance of the commissariat who view it as graffiti and unofficial. In return the more senior commissars keep their gas-masks on when in combat to stir anger into the men, making them fight harder for the injustice caused to them. Lower Commissars tend not to test such practises, wary of the men turning on them when cut off from high command.

Recruitment: The Virus Run

Any outsider coming into contact with any surviving member of the Borlina virus attacks must first be inoculated from the infectious version of the virus which can be fatal to weaker immune systems. New Recruits however are not so lucky. Firstly they are put through a year of heavy training wearing gas masks. Graduation into the Lucky 88th is only complete after a gruelling month fighting through the Virus Run, a heavily infected area of the former Borlingrav Palace, now a Bastion of pestilence and disease. The survivors of this infamous death zone gain the respect of the rest of the regiment, except for the veterans who hate all outsiders including the commissariat.
